Practical Application

Instructional Videos
Fundamental Skills

Section One:
Skeletal Accuracy
Accuracy and knowing exactly where you are in the body is among the most crucial skills a manual therapist can develop. Most therapists have an understanding of which muscle group they are addressing however they often lack the knowledge of which vertebrae or rib they are on top of and may also be effecting.

Skeletal palpation and accuracy is an often difficult and time-consuming job, however it is far from impossible and well-worth the effort. If you can find a radius, an ulnar, or a calcaneus, you can find an L5, a T5, or a rib 4. It just takes practice, concentration and good technique.

Accuracy allows us to track and gauge our results; where we have been, why, and how effective we have been. From there we may learn and change our approach as needed; with our clients, with our own skillsets, with our profession. To progress, collect data and research, and adhere to scientific principle, consistent accuracy is absolutely essential.

Section Two:
Unwinding Technique

To begin unwinding technique, we'll start at the appendicular skeleton -- the legs, arms, hands, and feet. Here we will learn the basic fundamentals that will ultimately be applied to the spine and ribcage. These techniques are both gentle yet powerful and are well-suited for working on older clients.

Use caution, take your time, be comfortable, work without strain. Monitor your client for any signs of discomfort. If so, go lighter, change your pressure or discontinue.
Be confident. Working with the appendicular skeleton is extremely low-risk and high reward.

A. Unwinding the Legs

Part 1: The Ankle
Unwinding joint capsule.
In this video you will learn how to gently unwind a restricted ankle joint and create better movement.

Part 2: The Tibia/Fibula
Unwinding interosseous membrane.
In this video you will learn how to unwind the connective tissue between the tibia and the fibula. This will help with motion in the lower leg, ankle and knee.

Part 3: Musculotendinous Junctions; Gastrocnemius/Soleus into Achilles
Unwinding Soft-Tissues.
In this video you will learn how to gently and quickly unwind soft tissue (muscle and fascia) by focusing on the Golgi Tendon Organs located in the Musculo-tendinous Junctions between muscles and tendons. The Golgi Tendon organs are sensory receptors that detect changes in muscle tension. We will start at the bottom of the calves - the Gastroc/Soleus Junction as it forms the Achilles.
